Leaks/ AKUFO ADDO MOCKS MAHAMA “I’m also a Historian” by hammy(f) : 5:59 pm On May 16

Having been patting himself on the shoulder for ending the successive reign of the “Johns” in Ghanaian politics, President Akufo-Addo is priding himself as setting the stage for ‘Historians’ to also take over the mantle of leadership of the country.

Obviously, mimicking former President John Dramani Mahama’s constants reference to his shrewdness in history, President Akufo-Addo recently stunned his book launch audience when he announced that he is also a “historian” who has got hold of the keys to the Flag Staff House.

President Akufo-Addo, who has since his swearing-in resorted to the wearing of African wear, a trademark of his predecessor, John Mahama, signaled he may have not only broken the myth surrounding the “Johns” association with Ghana’s presidency, but also, to show that it is now the turn of historians taking over the mantle of leadership of the country.

Speaking at the launching of the book, “Ghana’s Pride and Glory” authored by Lawyer Aidoohene Chinbuah, President Akufo-Addo surprised his audience when he majestically stated “as you all know, I’m somewhat of a historian myself.”

Clearly, drawing on how he was jabbed for adulterating Ghana’s history in his speech to mark Ghana’s 60 independence anniversary at the Black Star Square, the former Abuakwa South lawmaker-turned-President, said “to the extent to which a person who’s every pronouncement on our history provokes passionate controversy – can be said to be a historian.”

Revealing how he much relishes controversy, President Akufo-Addo explained; “controversy and passion are illuminating; they are lights on the path for the truth and that has to be the goal.”

This was the first time President Akufo-Addo has openly admitted his proclivity to controversy.

Virtually responding to critics that, he skewed his first Independence Day speech by extolling the virtues of his kinsmen, the president said he has always sparked controversy in the country with his public pronouncements because he is not a “dull politician”.

“This has been a very strange week. On Monday, I made a speech to the country which I tried to speak about how we became Ghana. And like everything I say, it’s ended up in controversy. But that is how it should be. A politician who doesn’t generate controversy is a dull politician,” he stated.

President Akufo-Addo made history last December when he convincingly defeated John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress who was seeking his second term in office.

He thus became; the first “non-John” to climb to the presidency after all four past Presidents in the Fourth Republic bears the name “John”.

Before Nana Akufo-Addo’s victory, Ghanaians lived with the myth that only a “John” can become President of Ghana.

This myth was consolidated when Mr John Mahama succeeded late President John Mills who died in office and eventually won the 2012 elections. Before President John Mills was President John Kufuor who also took over from President John Rawlings

Aside bearing the name “John”, ex-President Mahama variously touted himself as a “student of history” who had ascended to the highest office in Ghana.

Drawing inspiration from this statement, President William Akufo-Addo, not bearing the name “John”, said he is also a “historian” like his predecessor who became President.

Leaks/ Why Trump probably won't get in trouble for telling Russia highly classified information by hammy(f) : 6:00 pm On May 16

Business Insider - Shortly after The Washington Post broke the news that President Donald Trump revealed highly classified information to Russia's foreign minister and its ambassador, one question immediately arose:

Can Trump get in trouble for this?

The most likely answer is no.

That's because in the United States, the system of classifying information has no legal basis. The government's authority to classify material comes from executive orders enacted by the president — Barack Obama signed the most recent one in 2009.

As commander in chief, Trump gets the final say on how sensitive information gets disseminated, no matter how classified. So while any other US government official would face serious repercussions for sharing classified intelligence with a political adversary, the president is within his legal right to do so.

There are exceptions to this presidential privilege — for example, he can't share certain information about nuclear weapons.

But in this case, it doesn't appear Trump broke the law, and any consequences he faces will be likely be only of the political variety.

Trump and his Republican allies have in the past criticized Hillary Clinton — Trump's one-time presidential election rival — for her handling of classified information amid an FBI investigation into her use of a private email server during her time as secretary of state.

Leaks/ VIDEO: Commuter runs along with train after finger gets stuck in train door by hammy(f) : 7:01 pm On May 17

A terrifying moment when a man’s finger got stuck between doors of a moving train was captured by an onlooker in China. The incident happened on Monday in Jiangsu province, reported People’s Daily China.

According to authorities the man’s hand got stuck after he got into the wrong train and he didn’t get out in time because of which the finger got stuck in between the door.

Other commuters at the train station tried to help by signalling to the driver to stop the train but nothing really worked.

Luckily, the commuter was able to get his finger out of the door before the train station ended. The video posted by another traveller has surprised people because of how dangerous it was for the commuter and could have been fatal too if he hadn’t to remove his hand out in time.

Social media was horrified to see the man’s ordeal. Many suggested that the train should have a mechanism for accidents like these.

Leaks/ Set Standardized Price For Cashew – Gov’t Urged by hammy(f) : 10:30 pm On May 17

Nana Ampaabeng Kyeremeh, the 2013 national best Cocoa and Cashew farmer, has appealed to the government to set a standardized price for cashew products for the industry to thrive.

He said cashew needed stable and favourable market price like cocoa so that it would boost the interest of farmers to grow the economic tree in commercial quantity.

In an interview with the Ghana News Agency (GNA) at Mesidan in the Techiman North District of Brong-Ahafo Region, Nana Kyeremeh said the gradual decline in the prices of cashew products was not good for the industry.

He said the production of cashew in Brong-Ahafo region had declined in recent times because of low market price of the nuts and appealed to the government to address the situation.

Nana Kyeremeh indicated that cashew farmers also needed incentive packages like training and provision and proper application of agro-chemicals from the government.

This, he said, would not only motivate farmers to increase production, but would also help improve on quality and yield of cashew nuts.

Nana Kyeremeh also underlined the need for the government to adequately supply farming inputs to farmers, and asked the unemployed youth to regard farming as lucrative business.

Leaks/ OccupyGhana Petitions Attorney-General Over Charges Laid And Filed Against Huang & 4 Others by hammy(f) : 2:19 am On May 18

….In The Case Of Republic V. En Huang & 4 Others (Case No. Cr 344/2017)

OccupyGhana has seen a copy of what purports to be the Charge Sheet in the case of Republic v. En Huang & 4 Others (Case No. CR 344/2017) and dated 8th May 2017, and a copy attached for ease of reference.

We note that under the Statements of Offence, the accused persons are charged with the offences of (i) Illegal Employment of Foreign Nationals (in breach of section 24 of the Immigration Act and regulation 18 of the Immigration Regulations), and (ii) Disobedience of Directive Given (in breach of section 52 of the Immigration Act.)

However, under the Particulars of Offence, we are told that the First Accused Person had employed the other Accused Persons “to work illegally at a small-scale mining site,” and that all the accused persons, being holders of visitors’ visas had also disobeyed the condition that required them “not to engage in any employment in Ghana.”

We are deeply concerned that the immigration offences laid and filed against the Accused Persons do not match the severity of the act of employing or being employed “illegally at a small-scale mining site.” It is true that a person commits an offence if he/she “disobeys or disregards an obligation imposed or directive given by or under [the Immigration] Act.” But the punishment for this offence is a maximum fine of Twelve Thousand Ghana Cedis (GH¢12,000) and/or a maximum prison term of two (2) years, under section 52 of the Immigration Act.

And, unless the law has been changed, regulation 18 of the Immigration Regulations provides that an individual who employs a foreigner in breach of section 24 of the Immigration Act attracts a penalty of only Five Hundred Ghana Cedis (GH¢500) payable to the Immigration Service. It is only upon failure to pay that measly penalty that the person may be taken to court, not for employing a foreigner illegally, but for failure to pay the measly 500 Cedi and upon conviction pay a fine of Four Thousand and Two Hundred Ghana (GH¢4,200) Cedis.

However, from our research, foreigners are absolutely prohibited from engaging in small-scale mining in Ghana. It is therefore an offence under section 99 of the Minerals and Mining Act for foreigners to engage in small scale-mining, and offenders attract a fine between GH¢360,000 and GH¢3.6M, and/or a maximum jail term of 20 years. Further, the equipment used in or associated with the offence and any product derived are to be seized, and are liable to forfeiture by a court order and then allocated to “the appropriate state institution” within 60 days by the Minister responsible for mining.

That is why we are concerned that if these Accused Persons employed others or were employed “to work illegally at a small-scale mining site,” then the immigration charges that have been laid and filed are really minor as compared to what the law provides for in the Minerals and Mining Act.

We therefore Petition your office to call for the docket on this matter, investigate the charges laid and filed, and if found necessary, for fresh, proper, weightier and more relevant charges to be filed or added.

The fight against illegal mining in Ghana is a fight to protect, not only the present, but the future of this country. It is therefore imperative that the law must be applied to all who fall foul of it, without fear or favour.

Yours in the service of God and Country,

The Church’s stance on sex before marriage has been subjected to intense scrutiny lately since lots of people are of the belief that the principle has no place in the modern setup. Leaks/ Overturn ruling and re-arrest freed Delta Force 8 – NDC MPs by hammy(f) : 4:26 am On May 18

The Minority NDC Caucus in Parliament is demanding for the immediate overturn of the Kumasi Court ruling that freed 8 members of vigilate group, Delta Force for lack of evidence.

They also want the court to order for the re-arrest of the group and prosecute them.

In their view, Wednesday’s court ruling is a slap in the face of justice and something which will undermine the administration of justice in Ghana.

The Minority Leader, Haruna Iddrisu who addressed a press conference some few hours after the release of the susppects said they find the action of the Attorney-General and the government capricious, arbitrary and partisan in the matter.

We find it very bizarre for the Attorney-General to say there is lack of evidence to prosecute the Delta Force vigilante group members when there was enough evidence shared on Facebook, twitter and other social media platforms to deal with“, he noted.

A Kumasi Circuit Court on Wednesday struck out a case in which eight members of the Vigilante group, Delta Force, affiliated to the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) were being tried for aiding the escape of their 13 colleagues from lawful custody.

The court presided over by her honour Patricia Amposah arrived at the decision after the prosecution failed to provide evidence against the accused.

The eight were charged with causing disturbances in court, resisting arrest and rescuing persons in lawful custody.

The prosecution tendered in a response from the Attorney General after it presented the docket for advice.

According to the prosecutor, ACP Okyere Darko, the police did not have enough evidence to support the charges levelled against the accused persons.

Lawyers for accused say they have been vindicated since they earlier argued that their clients were innocent.

Background

Stoutly built members of Delta Force stormed the Regional Coordinating Council and forcibly ejected Mr. Agyei because he is not a native of the Ashanti Region. It took the timely intervention of the police to save the situation and restore law and order.

The angry men had earlier destroyed some office equipment in their bid to drive out Mr Agyei.

Their action was roundly condemned by a large section of the public who called for their arrest. Less than 24 hours after the act, the leader of the group Kwadwo Bamba was arrested by the Police.

Other members were subsequently arrested and charged for the offence of conspiracy to assault and assaulting a public officer and causing unlawful damage.

On the day they were arraigned before court, the Presiding Judge remanded them into prison custody, a decision that angered their colleagues who had stormed the court premises. They eventually got their colleagues freed.

The police subsequently arrested 8 perseons whom they suspected aided the escape of 13 members of the group.

Leaks/ Would you carry something abroad for a stranger? by hammy(f) : 5:56 pm On May 18

The next time you take an international flight, how about transporting something in your suitcase for a complete stranger?

If your answer to that question is a resounding “no way”, and the very thought conjures up terrifying images of unwitting drug mules and long prison sentences, you might need to think again.

“I always take things back from my travels for family and friends,” says 45-year-old French airline worker Olivier Kaba. “Now not only am I able to bring things for others, but I get rewarded financially for doing it.

“In the past two years I have made about 1,000 euros ($1,100; £860).”

Olivier is a regular user of Worldcraze, one of three similar firms that have launched in recent years to help connect people who would like to buy something from a different country, with travellers who have spare space in their suitcase and want to make a bit of money by being informal couriers.

Image caption There are some products that ex-pats just cannot live without

The idea is that the buyer can quickly get his or her hands on a product that may not be available to buy or import where he or she lives (country A), or that the item may simply be a lot cheaper abroad (country B).

So with transactions made via the three companies’ websites and apps, travellers who are due to fly from country B to country A can purchase and transport the products for the buyers. They can then arrange to meet to hand them over.

Over the past 24 months Olivier says he has transported everything from three months’ supply of French salami to the US, bags of Japanese sweets called “Tokyo banana”, and 20kg of fabric samples for a woman starting her own business.

“I discover new products I have never heard of,” he says.

Worldcraze was launched in 2012 by French entrepreneurs Frederic Simons and Guillaume Cayard.

Olivier Kaba makes about 500 euros a year transporting goods via Worldcraze

On a trip to New York Frederic noticed a large price difference between Levi’s jeans in France and the US, and the idea was born.

Today Worldcraze says it has 10,000 users, with Apple products being the most frequently delivered items.

From each transaction Worldcraze takes €2.50 from the buyer, and 10% of the traveller’s payment, which is up to 10% of the cost of the product being transported.

Singapore-based Ouibring has a similar business model.

Founded in 2016 by developers Joel Gordon and Andrew Crosio, they say that one Ouibring delivery is now made every day on average.

Goods delivered so far include artisan coffee from Japan to Hungary, a baby carrier from Thailand to the US, a candle carried from India, and a room spray from Singapore to the Czech Republic.

Image caption Joel Gordon says Ouibring flags any inappropriate requests

“For shoppers this is a way of getting previously unavailable products, full stop,” says Joel.

“For bringers [the travellers who deliver the items] it’s about making some money, and meeting interesting people who appreciate the effort, and can share tips for exploring the place you’re visiting, or the next step on your journey.”

To remove the risk of illegal or counterfeit products being transported both Ouibring and Worldcraze only allow users to buy and collect new products from legitimate shops.

Worldcraze’s chief marketing officer Constance Claviez Homberg says: “Our users can’t buy illegal products because they are buying products directly in shops.

“That way it is just impossible to carry illegal stuff, or counterfeit products. [And] travellers have to upload the product’s bill on our platform to prove that the product is congruent.”

The company also advises users to check on whether the item in question is legal in the destination country, and has staff that check out requests made on its website and app every day.

Ouibring’s Joel Gordon says that it also has a “moderation system” which “flags requests that may be inappropriate, and we remove requests if required”.

He says that the company also advises users that if they are unsure about anything they should get in touch via its secure contact form “and we’ll get back to you asap”.

“We are happy to provide advice for travellers for specific questions,” says Joel. “At the end of the day, it is the individual traveller’s responsibility to ensure they comply with the relevant laws of the country they are travelling to.”

Mumbai-based Beck Friends, another firm that enables travellers to transport goods for other people, doesn’t limit people to purchasing new items.

Instead a traveller recently transported a much-loved teddy bear from Chicago to Mumbai after its owner, a four-year-old girl called Heer, left it behind.

Image caption Beck Friends helped reunite Heer and her bear Teddy

To remove any security concerns, the buyer and carrier have to be first connected on social media, such as on Facebook, LinkedIn or Google+. Users must also upload two valid forms of identification, such as a passport and driving licence.

Beck co-founder Deep Malhotra says: “Security is the prime concern, and we are building a robust platform to address this.”

Where things get more complicated is the issue of export and import tariffs, which vary greatly from country to country. All three companies say they advise users on this, and it is the buyer who ultimately has to pay any charges.

If any traveller is unsure of something, or gets into any difficulties, all three companies say they have support staff available around the clock to help, be it via telephone, live web chat or email.

Ouibring’s Joel Gordon says that he doesn’t think security or customs worries will hold back the growth of his company.

“Our vision is to become another part of daily international life, like Airbnb, with people all around the world helping to make transport, logistics and travel work together better.”

Leaks/ A must listen to Audio: Galamseyer invokes ‘Antoa Nyama’ a gods on Prez. Addo - give a deadline day before... by hammy(f) : 8:02 pm On May 18

The man whose earthmoving equipment was torched by some angry youth at Abekoase in the Atiwa district of the Eastern Region has invoked the dreaded Ashanti deity ‘Antoa Nyama’ on President Akufo-Addo and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government and its appointees for the loss.

The youth numbering about 300 burnt two new Liebherr excavators, three heavy duty generators, a new Nelson Gold concentrator, two drums of engine oil, two drums of hydraulic oil, a 5000-litre poly tank, 6000-litre diesel container, six water pumps, tools and equipment boxes and welding plants belonging to Agyei Dankwa Investment, which they claim does illegal small-scale mining (galamsey) in the area.
.
But Chief Executive Officer of the mining company, Patrick Agyei Dankwa is blaming government for his predicament.

He indicated that the youth in the area would not have taken the law into their own hands if government had not started the fight against illegal mining known in local parlance as galamsey.

A livid Agyei Dankwa said he engages in small scale mining and has acquired the needed permit from the Minerals Commission.

The cost of the equipment according to him is estimated at USD$1.5million and does not have such an amount to buy a new one.

The angry miner described as total wickedness the action taken by the youth but rather chose to curse President Akufo-Addo and other politicians especially in the NPP he claims are deeply involved in galamsey to also suffer the same fate.

“Nana Addo and his government should take drastic measures and bring perpetrators to book else something bad will happen to the country. I am deeply hurt and if government takes no action, then God should use me to punish these politicians. They will face even more disasters more than I am facing now” he cried on Accra-based Neat FM.

Mr Agyei Dankwa has therefore given government two weeks ultimatum to take action or face his wrath.

He is also predicting a more serious disaster if nothing is done about his current predicament.

“The God I serve will deal with them if government refuses to take drastic measures to solve my situation because our leaders don’t speak the truth” he stated.

Leaks/ Freeing Delta Force Members capricious and abuse of discretion-Minority   by hammy(f) : 8:03 pm On May 18

The decision by the Attorney General to file Nolle Prosequi dropping charges against the eight members of Delta Force said to have aided escape of thirteen of their colleagues from custody is capricious and abuse of discretion, the Minority have stated

“It is abuse of due process and not candid. It was obviously exercised for narrow political expediency” the National Democratic Congress (NDC) minority in parliament condemned what they called cancerous discretion of the Attorney General.

Minority Leader Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, following the decision of the Attorney General to curtail the trial of the eight Delta Force members, a vigilante group in New Patriotic Party (NPP) addressed a press conference to attack government and NPP on the latest development.

“The decision of the Hon. Attorney General is a confirmation of the claim by the leading members of NPP at the time of the lawless action by the lawless Delta Force that the culprits will be set free” .

“We are of the view that the Government is pandering to partisan pressures to the detriment of justice” he alleged.

The Chief Prosecutor claimed she exercised such constitutionally discretion on grounds that the State lacks evidence to continue the case.

But the NDC minority disagrees saying government could have opened itself for evidence from the people to ensure case travel it full length to show they mean business.

“The Sitting  Judge, Court Clerks, Court Bailiff, Court Warrant Officers,  journalists as well as notable public figures in whose presence the said court was physically attacked and the accused persons freed, are alive available to be interviewed and evidence be taken from them” they concluded in the statement.

Leaks/ PHOTOS: Former President Mahama builds multi-million mansion in Bole by hammy(f) : 8:00 pm On May 19

Former President John Dramani  Mahama has finally built a multi-million  mansion in Bole his hometown in the Northern Region of Ghana.

The Former President Mahama who was the Member of Parliament (MP) for the Bole-Bamboi Constituency from 1997 to 2009 was consistently criticized by residents for his inability to build a house in Bole but preferred to live at the prestigious Cocoa Research Institute Guest house at Bole each time he visited the area.

Perhaps these criticisms made him build the house even though it seems he might not ever live in the house.

The General Manager of  Bole-based Nkilgi FM,  Mr Mahama Haruna who spoke to mynewsgh.com disclosed that residents of Bole have began to commend the former President Mahama for putting up the house which is the biggest mansion in the area.

He said Former President Mahama’s inability to build a house in Bole even though he became the MP for Bole-Bamboi Constituency  and rose from being a Deputy Minister, Minister, Vice- President to President was one of the biggest campaign issue against him by the locals.

“Not even explanations that former President Mahama’s father, the late E. A Mahama who was the first Member of Parliament and the first government Minister had a house in Bole would let the people stop assuming he didn’t have Bole at heart”, Mr Haruna said.

Reports say the mansion has become a tourist attraction with residents visiting to catch a glimpse of the house even though the place is walled and well protected with the latest security systems.

Leaks/ Stay Away!! Mzbel Strongly Warns Ex-Prez Mahama by hammy(f) : 11:22 pm On May 19

Singer Mzbel has admonished Ghana’s immediate past President John Dramani Mahama, to stay away from the NDC’s next primaries to select the party’s 2020 election’s Presidential candidate.

According to the staunch Mahama supporter, he should stay away because he was betrayed by some elements within the party and those elements should find their own leader.

She wrote on Facebook:

“Hmmm so soon people are already asking for u to return in 2020… Medi3 i’m really against that! I dont support cos i believe u should rise above the betrayal and pettiness of Ghanaian politics. U have been accepted by the international community as a spokesman for Africa. Daddy please don’t descend into the Ghanaian gutter. Let those who betrayed you come up with their flagbearer. #MyOpinion #StillNDC“

Mzbel went all in for the NDC and Mahama in the last election, a decision which brought her all sorts of problems when the NPP won.

Leaks/ We’ll deal with you, if you flout ban – Amewu to Small Scale miners by hammy(f) : 12:35 am On May 20

The government has warned the Ghana National Association of Small Scale Miners that they will be dealt with, if they breach the freeze on all forms of Small Scale mining.

Members of the Association announced a planned demonstration dubbed “all-die-be-die” to register their displeasure over the ban.

But in an interaction with journalists after a three-day tour of the Ashanti region, the Minister of Lands and Natural Resources cautioned that the miners may return to the sites at their own risk.

“I keep on saying that there is going to be a deployment of the law enforcement agencies; the Police the Army and the Airforce for a sustainable period – not less than one year, and that is going to come shortly. So if anybody dares to return to the site and it results in equipment being confiscated, that will be very unfortunate.
