Take ‘Double’ out of National Security - Martin Kpebu by Emily(f) : 10:46 am

'Double' is a former phone dealer who joined the national security after three weeks training

A private legal practitioner has argued that Ghana’s security apparatus be rid of unqualified people.

Martin Kpebu said on Newsfile on Joy FM/MultiTV on Saturday that the National Security is no place for unqualified people to be enrolled.

He told the host, Samson Lardy Anyenini that such persons could serve as paid informants to the security services as an alternative.

”...they could serve in that capacity.” Mr. Kpebu argued.

The lawyer’s comments come after social media went agog after it was revealed that a former polling station chairman of the governing NPP who was a mobile phone dealer at Kwame Nkrumah Circle in Accra got enrolled into the National Security after three weeks of training.

Testifying before the Emile Short Commission, the body tasked to investigate the Ayawaso West Wuogon, Bright Akomea, otherwise called ‘Double,’ said he saw an advertisement in the newspapers and followed up to apply.

According to him, he was subsequently trained in map reading, handling basic arms and how to use the Gota communication gadget.

The three weeks-trained national security operative was part of a battalion deployed to the house of the opposition NDC candidate the very day of the by-election on suspicion that there was a stockpile of arms there.

The incident turned bloody and the NDC has accused the government of releasing “hoodlums” to torment their candidate.

Speaking on the fallout, Martin Kpebu believes the National Security apparatus “is not a place for people like him [Double].”

“Double and his ilk have to be taken out of the system,” he stressed.
