Mawarko saga: Victim’s eye problem is from onions – Jihad tells Court by PrettyPrisi(f) : 1:01 pm

The embattled Abelemkpe Branch Supervisor of Marwako Fast Food Restaurant, Jihad Chaaban has told the District Court at Abeka that Evelyn Boakye’s eye problem was as a result of onions the victim was cutting.

He also denied ever holding the victim’s head into blender full of pepper but rather he held the chin of Evelyn Boakye after she made a mistake at the kitchen.

At the first day when the accused person opened his defence in a case in which he has been charged with three counts to wit; Offensive Conduct to breach of peace, assault and causing harm, he vehemently denied dipping the face of the victim into pepper.

Chaaban, who was giving evidence through an Arabic Interpreter Mohammed Mubarak Hidir, a lecturer at the University of Ghana said “I am a Muslim and I believe in Prophet Mohammed, Peace be onto him and that I cannot do this kind of thing. I didn’t do it and I cannot do it.”

When asked about the victim’s claim that he manhandled her, he continued: “The Prophet did not ask us to do these kinds of things so I never did such that thing.”

There was drama in court as at the point of the evidence the interpreter had a misunderstanding with the lawyer of the accused for misinterpreting his clients’ words.

This made the trial judge, Victoria Quansah to ask the accused to clarify his claims in English which he (Jihad Chaaban) did. The case has been adjourned to 18Th May, 2017 for continuation of the evidence.

A female worker of the Abelenkpe Branch of Mawarko was allegedly maltreated by Chaaban, a Lebanese supervisor, for ostensibly fidgeting with a blender she was using to blend pepper on February 26, 2017.

The young lady, Evelyn Boakye, had her face immersed in blended pepper for about five minutes and was subsequently locked up by Chaaban for hours before she was released to leave the workplace.

The Public Relations Officer of the Accra Regional Police Command, Assistant Superintendent of Police Mrs Afia Tenge, had indicated that the police immediately arrested Chaaban on February 28, 2017 after receiving a complaint from the victim.

In his evidence to the court presided over by Her Worship Mrs Victoria Quansah, the accused said he has been a supervisor of for two years and some months and that on that fateful day, February 26, 2017 he was outside the kitchen and heard the sound of the blender.

He said as the supervisor in charge he went to the kitchen to see what was happening and upon reaching there he saw two employees, one Sussan, who works at the fruit department and Evelyn Boakye who also works at the rice department preparing fresh pepper.

According to him, he turned off the blender which was making the sound because the two female staff did not know how to use the blender.

“It is not their work to prepare this fresh pepper, so when I entered I saw this container full of onions. I realised because of this the engine was making that sound because it is my work, I realised this is not the way we prepare fresh pepper.

The mistake was that Evelyn Boakye filled the blender with onion and was beside the blender. I asked her what she was doing, she said to me in a derogatory manner; don’t you know what we are doing? We are preparing fresh pepper. Do you think I don’t know you are preparing fresh pepper, I also asked her, but this is not how to do it.

I told her to look inside the container of the blender but she was looking elsewhere meaning she does not want to look at the mistake she made. I told her twice to look inside the blender but she did not so I tapped and turned her chin to let her know what she had done. I looked at her face and she was sharing tears.”
