(Episode 14) The Trials of A Man… A Story of Love and War by Bigkwame(m) : 11:16 am |
Mamus, his mother and sister watched the soldiers take Lady Temisan away. Mrs. Akalaba was worried. Temisan had been a source of strength since her husband died at the war front. It was with sad eyes, she watched her leave. They turned as Okereke came out of the office and walked up to them. Okereke: “Abeg i need una help. i need place to stay.” He said. Mrs Akalaba: “my place is not big enough for all of us o. that is why Mamus is here most times. You don’t have a place to stay?” she asked. Okereke: “I need to leave here. i been stay because of her.” he said, pointing at the already disappeared army truck. “Abeg i no want make dem add me put for revolutionaries matter, i don tire.” He said. Mrs Akalaba: “you will sleep on the bare floor.” she said. Okereke nodded his head and the three of them left. ==== Omonigho and Wale had spent the night in a farmer’s hut. They had avoided the roads, walking through the forest all night until the boy got tired. The next morning they walked on until they met a lumber merchant driving back to town with logs of wood piled up on his truck bed. He welcomed them and had carried them as far as the river front before they jumped down and thanked him. Omoniogho considered crossing the river with a canoe or a boat but he knew there will be people waiting, with his description and a gun or knife, watching out for him. So he carried Wale on his back and they walked along the river shore slowly getting to Umuahia. After two nights in the bush feeding from the pots of sympathetic farmers, they arrived at Umuahia. Omonigho hid Wale in an abandoned house close to a sand fill. It was an area that was mainly filled with people who comb through the waste seeking for bottles, plastic, metals and so on. Nobody knew them there. After scrounging for food, they slept. The next day, Omonigho sat outside watching the pickers as the moved through the dirt – their nose covered with cloth, their hands covered with gloves. Wale came to join him some minutes later. Wale: “what are we going to do next?” he asked, rubbing his eyes. Omonigho: “we need to get to Onitsha then cross the river without getting caught by the rebels.” He replied. Wale: “that will be hard o. do you know anybody to ask?” he asked. Omonigho shook his head and stared on at the scavengers. Wale: “when I was with Obum, I used to meet different people. Some of them were criminals while some were rebels.” He said. He tapped Omonigho excitedly – “I know who we will meet. Obum carried me to one old woman the day before I was taken to the camp. I don’t know if she is a part of the revolution or if she is just a criminal but she will know how to get out of this town.” He said, excitedly. Omonigho: “no. there’s no guarantee that she will know and if she sees you then Major Okirika will know where to find us.” He replied, shaking his head. Wale stared at the scavengers quietly for some time. Wale: “I can show you the place then you can go and talk to her yourself. She has never met you.” he replied. Omonigho turned to look at Wale. “It is worth a try. It is better than sitting down here until we are caught.” He thought to himself. He nodded his head and got up. Omonigho: “we will go at night. There are too many eyes about during the day.” he said. Wale nodded his head in agreement. ==== Temisan sat in the interrogation room watching the army officer arrange documents in front of her. She had been beaten – her eyes were swollen shut and two of her fingers had been broken. She would have confessed to killing her own parents if they had asked her to but no one had asked her a single question. When she passed out, they poured water on her body and woke her up again to go through another round of severe beating. She could not believe that some few days ago, she was getting married and contemplating on how to comfort and assist widows and their children. She looked at her hands and watched as the wedding ring sparkled in the light. She had not seen or heard from Okiemute since she got here. She hoped he was handling the affairs of the Foundation properly. Army officer: “Lady Temisan Omatseye, what is your role in the revolution?” she asked Temisan: “please I have never been involved in the war or revolution. i was not even in the country during the war. I came back home some few months ago to help my people get their lives back together. I am no revolutionary.” She replied, staring at the woman through puffy eyelids. Army Officer: “so how did your leaflets get to the site of the bombing? Pieces of it were found sticking to parts of the bomb, which means that they were packed together.” She asked. Temisan: “If I was truly a rebel, will I leave something that is easily linked to me in such a place? I am not that stupid. I swear I do not know anything about that bombing.” She replied. Army officer: “we need you to give us the names of those who would have had access to the leaflets.” She said. Temisan: “almost everyone. It was supposed to be shared out during the weekend.” Army officer: “we have questioned your husband. Do you know what he said?” she asked. Temisan looked at her inquiringly. “He said that you have been harbouring a known rebel in your premises. You even gave him a job as your security. Is this true?” Temisan: “Okereke came looking for work and I gave him. is there a law that says I can’t employ him? besides at a time like this, there is no way of knowing who was a rebel before. i didn’t know if he was a rebel or not but he had not caused me any harm.” She replied. Army officer: “this Okereke is presently nowhere to be found. He was last seen leaving the foundation premises in the company of a lady and two children.” She replied. Temisan stared at the table –“is it possible? Could Okereke be the one behind the bombing?” she thought to herself. Army Officer: “we will find him, then you will tell us your role in the bombing.” She said, getting up. Temisan: “please I know nothing about the bombing.” She pleaded. Two soldiers came into the room and dragged her out. Temisan: “please let me speak to my husband. Let me speak to Okiemute!” she shouted as she was towed out of the interrogation room to her cell. ==== Okiemute drove to visit his brother at the secretariat. He was welcomed sadly. Omoefe brought a bottle of dry gin and two glasses and placed it on the table. He opened it and poured then he poured a small amount on the floor for the gods, after which, he gulped it ad poured another. Okiemute just stared at his drink sadly – Omoefe:”guy n worry dem go release am.” He said. Okiemute shook his head. Omoefe: “I hear from reliable source say dem dey find one of the men wey dey work with una. The security guy.” He said. Okeiemute: “Okereke? He is long gone.” He replied. Omoefe: “ehen…if dem catch the man then dem go fit release your woman.” He said. Okiemute: “I know where he go dey sha. I just need ask people. i get work for you” he replied. Omoefe: “how you mean?” he asked, staring at his brother in surprise. Okiemute: “I wan sell two plots of lands to take raise money to fight the matter.” He said. Omoefe: “who get the plots of land wey you wan sell so?” he asked Okiemute: “na our own – me and my wife. I need cash to take bribe my way into their cell. Also make I settle some people so that dem go fit quick effect her release. I need to do everything to make sure she comes out alive and soon too.” Omoefe: “I hope say you know wetin you dey do o?” he asked, collecting the documents from Okemute. Okiemute: “bros relax. Wetin be money to life. abeg, I want my wife back o.” he replied. Question: do you think Okiemute’s intentions are genuine?
