Eze Dr. Ihenetu (1st picture) was enthroned on August 30, 2012 as Eze Igbo of the Ghanaian community.
The Efua Sutherland Children’s Park erupted in excitement as the king announced the inauguration of the new yam eating thanks to the Almighty God for the 10 years of success of the Igbo throne in Ghana and for Igbo agriculture and other achievements. The New Yam festival, originating from the Ogidi community of Anambra State, Nigeria, is an important way of marking the beginning and end of the farming season, and is a celebration of the community’s life, achievements, culture and well-being. The essence of the festival is to express gratitude to God Almighty for life, protection and bountiful yam harvest. The Ghana festival attracted tourists and people of all professions and was recognized by UNESCO, a branch of the United Nations, the Ghanaian Heritage Institute and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture of Ghana, had the theme “Ten Years of Promotion and Preservation of Igbo Culture in the Diaspora.” EJ Dr. Ihenetu said: “The New Yam Festival is a time to give thanks for God’s bounty on our businesses, our health and our harvest wealth. “So, today we live to reap what we have planted which is represented by the yam. “By giving thanks to God at this time, we ask for good health and the resources needed for a clean farming season so that we can come together again next year to celebrate Thanksgiving.” Eze Dr. Ihenetu recalled that the relationship between Ghana and Nigeria began over many years through the then Public Works Department and the West African Frontier Force operated by the then British West African Government. ‘And, during the struggle for independence, people like Nigeria’s first president, Dr Nnamdi Azikiwe, lived in Ghana, where he passed through working as a journalist studying in the US. Eze Dr. Ihenetu noted that the establishment of the Igbo throne in Ghana 10 years ago dealt with challenges such as the Ebola scare, but firmly “certain dates have become cemented as part of the communal narrative” that defines the Igbo people of Ghana. “These days, in many ways we have showcased our culture and identity, to show who we are. Which is why it’s essential to know about them and learn from them.” He reminded Igbo leaders and parents of diaspora, it is a shared responsibility to teach the new generation Igbo culture and heritage. “We owe it to them to make them better people, wiser groups and better Nigerian-Igbos in Ghana for those who come after us,” said Eze Dr. Ihenetu. He thanked the government and the people of Ghana for accommodating Igbos and giving space to Igbos to work freely. The General Secretary of the opposition National Democratic Congress, Mr. Johnson Asiedu Nketiah also symbolically cut the yam and took a bite. Along with celebrating the cutting of yam festival, kola was also a blessing to celebrate. The vice-kings in turn paid homage to the Igbo Paramount King. Among the personalities recognized by the Igbo Paramount King, was Ghanaian gospel musician, Empress Gifty Osei, who was made a chief. She was named Ugo Ima Ndi Ngbo for her beautiful eagle intelligence. The Empress, along with her husband Hopeson Adorye, a member of the ruling New Patriotic Party, said at the gift ceremony that she was an “eagle of the times” and expressed delight at the recognition, vowing to continue to respect tradition and continue to use music to advance progress of humanity Source: GNA
